In 2015 a group of Havanese breeders and fanciers across the world agreed to support the research of UCDavis to learn about and improve on the genetic diversity of the Havanese. In order to provide as diverse a group as possible just over 200 dogs samples were submitted in order to find all the genes that exist in the Havanese breed. The goal is to discover the genome that influences the occurrences of auto immune disease such as Addisons, hemolytic anemia and a host of other similar conditions.
The Havanese Society of Ireland supports this research project and can confirm that samples of Irish Havanese have been submitted to UCDavis. We hope that this project will help breeders of the future and are looking forward to the results being published. Initially UCDavis tested 86 Havanese. This has now been increased to 242. Details of Genetic Diversity in Havanese can be found here. We are pleased to see how diverse Havanese are in comparison to other breeds and actively encourage breeders to adopt practices to preserve this diversity.
A similar study was conducted in Standard Poodles, and the information that came out of the study proved invaluable to breeders of Standard Poodles. To read about this study, please click here.
